Nogi Shrine 乃木神社
Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo · Open in Google Maps
Nogi Shrine honors General Nogi Maresuke and his wife Shizuko. After the funeral of Emperor Meiji in 1912, the couple took their own lives in their house next door, which is preserved beside the shrine. The nearby slope, Nogizaka, is named after him.
What to look for
- The Nogi residence, a wooden house with a brick stable, still stands next to the shrine.
- Because the couple died together, the shrine is associated with the bond between husband and wife, and weddings are held here.
- General Nogi also served as head of the Gakushūin school, so people pray here about education.
Enshrined kami
- General Nogi Maresuke 乃木希典命
What people pray for here
A lasting marriage and children's education.
Etiquette
This is a place of remembrance as much as a shrine. Keep your voice low around the residence.
