Heian Jingu 平安神宮

Sakyo, Kyoto · Open in Google Maps

Heian Jingū was built in 1895 to mark 1,100 years since the capital moved to Kyoto. It enshrines Emperor Kanmu, who founded the capital, and Emperor Kōmei, the last emperor to reign entirely in Kyoto.

What to look for

  • Its buildings are a scaled-down reconstruction of the main hall of the old Heian imperial palace, in vivid vermilion and green.
  • A giant torii gate stands over the road leading to the shrine.
  • Behind the main hall is a large strolling garden with ponds, stepping stones and seasonal flowers.

Enshrined kami

  • Emperor Kanmu 桓武天皇
  • Emperor Kōmei 孝明天皇

What people pray for here

Etiquette

The garden has its own entrance behind the main hall and is worth the time, especially in spring.
