The myth

Takemikazuchi was born from the blood on Izanagi's sword when Izanagi struck down the fire god.

Sent to Izumo to arrange the transfer of the land, he was challenged to a contest of strength by Takeminakata, a son of Ōkuninushi. Takemikazuchi won, Takeminakata fled to Suwa, and the land was handed over.

He is the main kami of Kashima Jingū. Tradition says he rode a white deer from Kashima to Kasuga in Nara, which is why the deer of Nara are treated as sacred messengers.
