Kukurihime 菊理媛神

Also known as: Kukuri-hime, Shirayama-hime

The myth

Kukurihime appears only briefly in the myths. In one version, when Izanagi fled the underworld and quarreled with Izanami at the border between the worlds, Kukurihime spoke to him, and Izanagi praised her words. What she said is not recorded.

She is worshipped as the goddess of Mt. Haku (Hakusan) and is the main kami of Shirayama Hime Jinja in Ishikawa.

What people pray to Kukurihime for

  • Good relationships
  • Love and matchmaking
  • Cutting ties with bad influences

Why: Because she stepped between the quarreling Izanagi and Izanami, she is prayed to for harmony between people; her name is also read as "binding", which links her to matchmaking.
